    Agentic Checkout Specification

The agentic checkout specification is a set of rules that artificial intelligence (AI) agents abide by when completing purchases on behalf of customers.

What Is the Agentic Checkout Specification?

In agentic commerce, AI agents are empowered to work autonomously, even to complete online purchases for customers. To ensure AI agents work according to preset rules, most payment protocols use agentic checkout specifications. Agentic checkout specifications are typically set and managed by one of two governing protocols: Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) or OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). Both of these protocols maintain a set of rules that AI agents must follow when completing purchases, handling shipping and taxes, or confirming orders with online merchants. The protocols offer standardized versions of agentic checkout specifications, which helps ensure that all merchants, payment processors, and AI agents follow the same, consistent data language. This makes it easier for AI agents to integrate into ecommerce systems and maintains governance over how agents handle checkout processes and tasks.
