2026 Consumer Research
Our latest report shares shoppers' fresh insights on buying behavior, loyalty, AI trust, and more.
DownloadLoblaw Companies Limited is the largest food and drug retailer in Canada, operating over 2,400 stores across grocery, pharmacy, and apparel. Its digital grocery arm, PC Express, powers the grocery ecommerce experience for Loblaw’s grocery banners, serving millions of shoppers and aiming to provide seamless online shopping experiences.
The PC Express team, the digital grocery arm of Loblaw Companies, wanted to improve its process for listing product information online.
The process relied on two distinct submission portals — one for data and one for images — and required significant manual work to ensure that information received from suppliers was compliant.
"Our old process was slow and prone to errors," says Jacqui Nie, senior manager of product information management at PC Express. "Our portals had strict submission parameters, and even for very minor mistakes, we'd have to go back and forth with our brand partners over [the] phone or email to correct and resubmit their files. It was hard for us, and it was also hard for them.”
These inefficiencies ultimately had a downstream effect on PC Express’s business. For example, new products could be sold in stores for weeks before appearing online, as Nie’s team worked to publish the corresponding product details.
“We were spending time and resources correcting submission errors and troubleshooting with suppliers, which ultimately caused delays in getting new content and products online,” Nie says. “We knew we had to make a change.”
“Salsify provides us with an organized, modern platform to collect and review supplier data, and lets us customize automated workflows to help us do our job. All our team needs to do is approve the output from Salsify Workflows before sending the content to our downstream systems and eventually, our website. It's incredibly efficient.”
— Jacqui Nie, Sr. Manager of Product Information Management, PC Express
In late 2024, Nie decided to take on a technology modernization project to make the team’s information publishing process more efficient. She selected Salsify for its robust technology, extensive supplier coverage, and strong cultural alignment with the PC Express team.
“We replaced both of our legacy portals with Salsify, which has introduced up-front validation to automatically catch any data errors,” Nie says. “Salsify provides us with an organized, modern platform to collect and review supplier data, and lets us customize automated workflows to help us do our job. All our team needs to do is approve the output from Salsify Workflows before sending the content to our downstream systems and eventually, our website. It's incredibly efficient.”
According to Nie, “Automation and validation are the key to good quality content — that’s a no-brainer. And good quality content is key to having a best-in-class digital presence. As a retailer, strong content makes you the best destination for your shoppers, who need accurate and complete product information to make a purchase.”
“You also want to be the best partner to your suppliers, ensuring their business grows alongside yours,” she adds. “And, looking ahead, you need structured, accurate data to prepare for agentic commerce and the AI models that will actively recommend products to shoppers.”
“We feel that Salsify has the tools and capabilities for us to continue moving forward in ecommerce. It's not a static product. Salsify continues to innovate, and working with a tech-forward company, who is also a true partner, is an incredible asset.”
— Jacqui Nie, Sr. Manager of Product Information Management, PC Express
PC Express’s adoption of Salsify has delivered measurable improvements in speed, efficiency, and data quality: The team has realized an 83% reduction in weekly processing time.
Before Salsify, it could take up to two weeks to get new product content online; now, it’s one to two days.
“Using Salsify has made an enormous difference,” Nie says. “It’s really night and day from how we were working before to how we are working now.”
In addition to internal efficiency, supplier performance has improved; supplier data published through Salsify scored 21 points higher on PC Express’s internal Supplier Scorecard for content quality.
"Suppliers are happy both because their content looks great and also because their workload has decreased," Nie says. "This transformation has served as a great reminder that our suppliers are our partners, and we have the same goal: getting the right information online at the right time."
For others modernizing their tech stacks, Nie advises that the key is finding a future-proof platform and a company you work well with.
