    Inference

An inference is when a generative artificial (GenAI) intelligence (AI) solution uses new inputs or information to make a decision or prediction.

    What Is an Inference?

AI technologies learn and conduct their work based on the information they’re fed. Because of that essential quality, nearly everything an AI does is an inference — or when an AI analyzes new information to make a decision or prediction. On the public-facing side, users who submit questions into AI-powered solutions like Google search or ChatGPT are engaging in an inference process with the technology. The user submits information, a keyword, or a question first. Then, the AI infers that information’s connection to other similar content to serve up relevant results. AI inferences are slightly different from AI training or evaluation practices, as inferences only work one way. A user provides the information; the AI makes the inference. In a training program, the user would then rework the inputs to optimize the outputs. The more the AI has learned through training models, the better and more precise its inferences will be.
