    Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is a standard language web developers use when creating and coding websites.

What Is Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)?

First developed in the early 1990s, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) was designed to give web developers and creatives a language through which they could write script for web pages. Over time, HTML has been upgraded and expanded to include new features and elements, making it one of the primary developing languages today.

Developers use Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) much in the same way as they would any other language. However, HTML offers a mix of textual and visual coding capabilities. For instance, a developer can use HTML to write paragraphs and sentences, and also add links, create page structures, and embed media files.

The foundation of the language is a series of tags that bookend sentences and elements. By placing the right tags in the right places, the developer not only creates the text for the website, but also tells the system where and how to place the text on the page.
