Attention is a machine-learning mechanism that enables artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to focus on the most relevant part of a data input.

What Is Attention?

Like humans, AI solutions are bombarded with information all the time. And like humans, AI can easily get bogged down by irrelevant or inconsequential details. Attention is a built-in mechanism that prevents this from happening. Attention mechanisms break inputted data into parts, then assign a weight to each part. The mechanism can increase or decrease those weights — which represent the relevance of the part to the task at hand — as it takes in new information. Essentially, attention mechanisms ensure AI solutions work as efficiently as possible without losing critical meaning while completing tasks. This is especially important for natural language processing (NLP) tools that generate written content or summarize information for users. By breaking a query down and assigning weights to various words or phrases, the AI can make sense of complex language inputs while maintaining speed and accuracy in its results.
