    Agent Payments Protocol

The Agent Payments Protocol is an open-source protocol that enables artificial intelligence (AI) agents to start and complete payments across platforms.

What Is the Agent Payments Protocol?

AI agents are incredibly useful because they can find products, serve recommendations, and make purchases virtually autonomously. The Agent Payments Protocol — designed collaboratively by Google and various payment processing companies — enhances the autonomy and security of AI-powered transactions. An open, shared protocol, the Agent Payments Protocol establishes a common language that agents and brands can use to complete payments. The tool uses what Google calls “Mandates” to verify that a human consumer is approving the AI-initiated purchase. Consider a consumer who’s waiting for the latest sneaker from their favorite shoe brand. The consumer can input their payment credentials into the system, then tell the AI agent to place an order as soon as the sneakers become available for purchase. When the agent makes the purchase, they’ll include the consumer’s Mandate to verify authorization to the merchant. This process increases security, provides more flexibility, and supports a connected ecosystem.
