    Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open-source solution created by Google that enables ecommerce apps, payment systems, and AI assistants to communicate effectively.

What Is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?

In modern ecommerce, brands and retailers use multiple systems for payment processing, product description storage, AI-powered shopping assistants, and more. When each system uses its own technical foundation, it becomes difficult to integrate systems due to incompatible formatting and labeling. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is a standardized, open-source protocol that creates a shared set of rules and a common “language” for ecommerce systems. By ensuring each system uses the same format, brands can easily plug one system into another for streamlined data access. UCP is a key component of agentic commerce, as it allows artificial intelligence (AI) agents to use this shared formatting to work autonomously. For example, agents can research products across sites on behalf of customers because each site shares a common inventory structure.
