Amy’s Kitchen Unifies PIM and Syndication To Improve Brand Presence on the Digital Shelf

The maker of beloved organic foods optimized its go-to-market processes to drive efficiency and digital shelf performance.

    About Amy’s Kitchen

Amy's is an organic food pioneer. Since 1987, Amy's has cooked with delicious, organic ingredients, making gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian foods for all.

When the Amy’s Kitchen team decided to consolidate and optimize their product data management, data syndication, and workflow processes, they had a few key goals in mind. These included creating a consistent brand presence across all of their digital channels, activating enhanced content on all key retailers, and reducing manual work to scale their business.

Initially, the team believed they just needed a product information management (PIM) solution. As they continued their digital transformation journey, they realized that they also needed a syndication solution.

“We built a cross-functional team that was not too structured. We really focused on making sure the people who own the data and the people who work with the data were both represented and had a voice. What started as two different projects effectively merged into one to capture the needs of all these teams,” says Michael Todd, senior applications engineer and the IT lead on the project.

At the time, product narratives and images were inconsistent depending on the retailer, and there was a desire to standardize the experience to create a better experience for shoppers.

The team eventually uncovered that across their brand and digital teams, there were many individual Word documents that were being manually maintained to manage and submit product information, which was causing inefficiencies and inconsistencies. Their PIM vendor at the time was also making it difficult for them to get data where it needed to be.

There was a need for process consolidation, automation, and collaboration to ensure that Amy’s Kitchen’s products were consistent, complete and optimized.

“[Everyone] uses Salsify. We trust the data there, and we’re confident in its accuracy. That means everyone can be better at their jobs.”

Salsify Becomes Amy’s Kitchen’s Unified Platform for PIM, Syndication, and Workflow

After getting internal alignment through a well-developed business case and clear requirements, the team chose to move forward with the Salsify PIM and Syndication solutions.

Amy’s Kitchen has imported 500 attributes to Salsify — with more to come — and has also implemented the Salsify Workflow and Enhanced Content modules. They are now able to store versions of their product records based on each retailer’s requirements, allowing them to quickly update content to stay consistent across all their channels.

The image transformation process has also been improved. Before Salsify, editing images to meet retailer requirements was done manually.

Now, images are auto-transformed in the Salsify Readiness Report before publishing, saving the team time and effort. Another benefit: The team’s digital asset manager (DAM) is now a much “cleaner” system, as there are fewer variations of images that need to be stored.

Having a single source of truth has also inspired better processes across teams.

“We have very passionate employees who want to get their jobs done. Unfortunately, in the past, that meant establishing their own data sources and systems with no clear owner. Now, everyone uses Salsify. We trust the data there, and we’re confident in its accuracy. That means everyone can be better at their jobs,” Todd says.

“There’s constant opportunity to optimize, and we keep uncovering more ways to take advantage of the Salsify system.”

Business Metrics Improve Across the Board

The Amy’s Kitchen team has realized many business performance improvements since implementing Salsify, including an estimated 1% lift in sales from enhanced content syndication and another 1% lift due to improved content quality for their top five retailers.

They also feel the brand is stronger due to their ability to quickly update content within a retailer’s required time frames.

Leveraging the Salsify Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) Data Pool, the team has been able to maintain the accuracy of their GDSN data. With GDSN information tied directly to the source-of-truth PIM, all teams can work off of one established and complete data set.

Amy’s Kitchen’s sales teams now have direct access to digital catalogs, which they can self-serve, as the team is confident that the data in the catalogs is current and ready to be shared with retailers and prospects. This has improved efficiency for their sales teams, saving thousands of dollars per month.

Regulatory teams also have easier access to the product information they need. It previously took one to two days for these teams to retrieve detailed product data due to multiple data sources. Today, it takes minutes using a simple search in Salsify.

Workflows have added another level of automation, saving time and increasing data quality.

“Now that we have an established source of truth, we have more confidence in our data and our processes have gotten easier and faster,” Todd says. “There’s a trust component that has been established between teams, and there's transparency for everyone on the product information process. The next step is to consider how we can level up our integrations with Salsify. There’s constant opportunity to optimize, and we keep uncovering more ways to take advantage of the Salsify system.”
